Julie Federico, Author of "The Bad Guys," and "Students Can Help Keep Schools Safe" Highlighted in Author Solutions Real Authors, Real Impact Campaign

Federico hopes to prevent school violence by teaching children to notice changes

BLOOMINGTON, IN / January 15, 2015  - Author Solutions, LLC, a Penguin Random House company and the world’s leading provider of supported self-publishing services, is featuring through its ongoing Real Authors, Real Impact campaign, Julie Federico, author of a pair of WestBow Press titles, “The Bad Guys” and “Students Can Help Keep Schools Safe.”

The books provide students and teachers solutions to a problem Federico, unfortunately, has intimate knowledge of—school violence. Through her role as a school counselor for Jefferson County Schools in Littleton, Colorado, Federico was a mental-health first responder at the 1999 shootings at Columbine High School

“I saw the devastating effects of the shooting and the difficult fallout in the years that followed,” Federico reflected. “I always wanted to protect others from this type of experience but was unsure of how to accomplish this.”

“In 2012, I watched in horror with the rest of the country as we collectively grieved the Sandy Hook school shootings. Ten days after the Newtown shootings, on Christmas Eve 2012, I wrote a school-violence-prevention tool that has the power to save many lives.”

The book, “The Bad Guys,” Federico intended for young readers—preschool through second grade. What she ended up writing was two books, “The Bad Guys” and “Students Can Help Keep Schools Safe,” a guide for students in grades three through eight.

“I hope to prevent school shootings by getting students to be aware of their environment, by noticing changes in classmates and strangers that may be in the school building,” says Federico. “Each time teachers read the book to their class, they are working in an effective manner to prevent violence. This project is much larger than me. I am honored and humbled to be the vehicle to share this message with the world.”

Throughout her career, Federico has written six children’s-services books and has been recognized with awards from The New England Book Festival and The Evvy Awards.
